Budget Update: SCSD Transparency

On Sunday, July 6th, Governor Deval L. Patrick signed and enacted the conference committee FY09 budget allocation recommendations. He vetoed and scaled back some amounts and the House and Senate will meet this week and next to possibly override some of his vetoes.

The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department receives the vast majority of their funding through line item 8910-0000. This line item is known as the county pool, as it represents an amount that is divvied up among the seven remaining county sheriff's departments: Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, Plymouth, and Suffolk (Nantucket county is also solvent, but does not receive funding from the county pool). The other seven sheriff's departments: Berkshire, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, and Worcester receive their funding in separate and dedicated line items.

The designation of being a county sheriffs or a state-sheriffs is determined by whether or not county government is still operational (i.e. electing a county treasurer or county commissioners) in a given county. Suffolk is a bit of an aberration to this rule, as we do not have a typical county form of government still in place. Nevertheless, the Boston City Council serves as Suffolk County Commissioners.

The total amount approved for line item 8910-0000 was $195,179,966. This amount is divided among the county sheriffs with oversight from the County Government Finance Review Board.

Thank You!
